In seventeenth-century England, many groups of Christians were dissatisfied with the rigid forms of the Church of England. This dissatisfaction led to a new way of worship and life. Seeking a more inwardly satisfying way of prayer and life, Goerge Fox (1624-1691) went as a young to many priests seeking inner peace and to receive only relevant answers. None had quenched his thirst, so one day, he heard a voice in the mountain meditating, asking God in the presence of the Holy Spirit. Finally, he heard a voice saying, “There is one, Christ Jesus, that can speak to thy condition to all humanity,” Joy filled his heart. From this experience, the central conviction of “Friends” was born – that the living Christ can speak directly to the needs of every seeking soul. This rich history and tradition is the foundation of our community, connecting us to our past and guiding us into the future.
